Communities First Project - 2016

During 2015, MADU were commissioned by NAS (on behalf of Cadw) to carry out an exercise to investigate the possibilities of engaging people living in five South Wales Communities First Cluster Areas with their local Maritime Heritage Sites.

Communities First is a Welsh government initiative aimed at tackling poverty and narrowing the economic, education/skills, and health gaps between the most deprived and more affluent areas in Wales. The five areas to which this exercise was to be applied were:

Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire, Vale of Glamorgan, Cardiff STAR & Cardiff East

The exercise was in two parts:

1.        A desk based study to identify Maritime Historical and Archaeological Sites within the five Communities First Cluster Areas.                                                 

2.        To liaise with the managers of the five clusters in an attempt to identify how it may be possible to engage people living within their respective areas in the identified sites.

The exercise concluded with the production of a report:

Study to Investigate the Possibility of using Maritime Heritage Sites to Create Community Archaeological Projects withing Communities First Cluster Areas of South Wales.
