RCAHMW / HLF Project

During 2017, the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monumants of Wales (RCAHMW) were awarded funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to run a project Commemorating the Forgotten U-Boat War around the Welsh Coast 1914-18.

Part of the project was to include the Nautical Archaeology Society (NAS) in the running of two field schools, one in North Wales and one in South Wales. The North Wales field school was to be run, based around the wreck of the Cartagena which lies approximately 6 miles off the north east coast of Anglesey in around 37m of water. To complement this field school, MADU were asked by the NAS to investigate a possible site and wreck upon which the South Wales field school could be run.

The exercise concluded with the recommendation that the South Wales field school could be run at Abercastle in Pembrokeshire and be based around the wreck of the Leysian which lies close to the cliffs and approximately 600m from the slipway at Abercastle Beach, in 10 - 16m of water, see the report:

The decision was subsequently made to run the first field school on Anglesey in North Wales during June 2018, and the second at Abercastle in South Wales during June 2019, and MADU were requested by NAS to plan and run both field schools.
